Wheelchair design has made huge gains in very recent history. The right chair makes a tremendous difference in the wheeler's degree of independence, comfort, and safety. You will learn about:
- Choosing a manual or a power chair
- The ergonomics of wheelchairs
- Specific criteria for wheels, seating, footrests, etc.
- Wheeling skills and maintenance issues
- Emphasis is on manual chairs, though much applies to power

- The various coping strategies people bring to bear
- Typical stages of adjustment and re-emergence
- The nature of independence

Gary Karp is the author of Life On Wheels, Choosing a Wheelchair, and Disability & the Art of Kissing. He is also co-editor of From There To Here: Stories of Adjustment to Spinal Cord Injury. He has lived with a spinal cord injury at T12 since 1973 when he was injured in a fall at the age of 18. He is a popular keynote speaker and workshop leader. In 2007 Gary was inducted into the Spinal Cord Injury Hall of Fame as a Disability Educator.
